ATV Operator Training - ATV-03

ATV or Quad Operator training is required under the WorkSafeBC OH&S regulations. ATV courses have been varied with no formally recognized course designed for the Silviculture Industry, an industry which uses Quads to the ultimate of their capacity in a workplace setting. This course has been developed specifically for the silviculture sector. The course has received recognition from the BCFSC and is under review by WorkSafeBC with the expectation that it will shortly be accepted by WorkSafeBC as meeting their standards.

A Certificate of Completion will be issued upon successful completion of the initial training.

A Certificate of Qualification can be issued after completion of the experiential training period and successful field competency evaluation.

Companies will have two options to get certified training for the ATV operators on their crews.

  • Train in-house trainers who will then be certified to train as many within their companies who will require the training. The training for these experienced supervisors will be two days so that they can learn the scripted content of the course, assure the lead trainer that they can safely operate an ATV to the standard set by the course material, and that they can train others and evaluate them for ATV riding skills and knowledge competency.

  • Receive one day training directly for those who will be operating quads through a qualified outside trainer using the WSCA developed material.

Course dates are typically developed based on demand. Courses will have from 6 to 8 students. Students are expected to provide their own quads. Should that not be possible, quads can generally be rented at an extra cost to the course. It is preferred that the student take care of this directly.

Refer to the Registrar page for course fees and application procedures.

Course ATV-03: ATV Operator

Duration: 1 day

Course schedule: Since these are in-house courses, they can be delivered as required by companies as soon as they have in-house staff trained through the ATV-02 course.

Courses are available for companies without in-house trainers if there is sufficient demand for a class of at least 6. Course fees for those courses where the WSCA provides the instructor are based on course location in relation to available instructors. To locate an instructor near you contact the Registrar. You can view a list of instructors on the Instructors page.

The intent of this course is to train ATV operators in-house. The course can be delivered in several formats which will be discussed during the ATV-02 course. Based on a single day delivery, it would be 4 hours in a classroom setting with 4 hours in a field setting based on a maximum of 8 students..

The following is an overview of the course outline:

  • operate ATVs under varied conditions encountered in silviculture operations
  • load and unload the ATV for transit
  • load and secure loads on the ATV to balance weight.
  • identify key parts of an ATV
  • list protective clothing and gear for operating an ATV
  • do pre-trip and post-trip inspections
  • towing a trailer
  • perform basic mechanical monitoring

  • WorkSafeBC OH&S regulations pertaining to ATV operation
